Cochin International Airport is the first international airport in India to be constructed and maintained outside the ambit of the government of India. The capital was provided by the Government of Kerala, NRIs, the travelling public, financial institutions, airport service providers and other Indian citizens. It is close to the Cochin sea port, Kanyakumari-Delhi railway line and the three national highways passing through Kerala, namely, NH-47, NH-17 and NH-49.

Though the ground handling is done by Air India, the company is managed by the Government representatives, industrialists, NRIs from 30 countries and representatives of financial institutions jointly. The airport is suitable for wide-bodied large aircrafts and has been planned on a modular basis to enable future extensions/ renovations, with enough space for future infrastructural developments and potential for speedy generation of additional revenue in such exigencies.
